The prevalence of anemic syndrome in patients with Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus

Abstract

This retrospective study analyzed the prevalence of anemic syndrome in 115 patients with Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus (DM1), divided into Group 1 (without kidney damage, n=72) and Group 2 (with Diabetic Nephropathy (DN), n=43). Anemia was detected in 38% of patients in Group 1, with a higher prevalence in women and those with a longer DM1 duration. In Group 2, hemoglobin levels showed a direct correlation with GFR and an inverse correlation with CKD stage and DM1 duration. Iron Deficiency Anemia (IDA) was the predominant type, accounting for 70.3% of all anemia cases in patients without DN and those with DN but preserved kidney function. Folate deficiency was noted to be independent of kidney function status.
