The role of outer membrane proteins in the structure of bacterial cell walls

The article examines the role of outer membrane proteins in the structural organization of bacterial cell walls, with a particular focus on gram-negative bacteria. Special attention is given to the lipopolysaccharide outer membrane, which provides protection against host defense mechanisms, antibiotics, and environmental stress factors. The structural and functional features of porins as trimeric outer membrane proteins are highlighted, emphasizing their stability, resistance to denaturation, and dual role in both bacterial survival and host-pathogen interactions. Porins act as key effectors of pathogenesis, modulating immune responses and ensuring the persistence of bacteria within the host organism. At the same time, they serve as target molecules for the innate and adaptive immune system. The study also underlines the importance of developing research competence among medical students by integrating biochemical and microbiological investigations into the educational process. This approach contributes to a deeper understanding of antibiotic therapy and the treatment of infectious diseases caused by pathogenic microorganisms.
